I was approached by Mistress Mathilde in the Outlands, who I have known almost my entire time in the SCA, to help out with a special project. Her apprentice, Adelaisa Bernois, was being elevated to the Laurel and Mathilde wanted to put together a laurel wreath for her with leaves contributed by friends from all around the Knowne World. It was my first time taking part in a project like this and I was very honored! So here it is, my goldwork and green silk laurel leaf.
Basic outline of the leaf and veins. Basic medium weight linen. Got to use one of my fancy German wooden hoops. Ooooh.
This was also the perfect project to use my new embroidery hoop stand so that I could have both hands free. You put the wide bit at the bottom under your leg, adjust and away you go.
Starting the outer edge. Two strands of the gold, couched with regular sewing thread in yellow.
The outer edge done! In the end there was two lines to two strands each for a total of four strands.
Starting to fill in with the green. Did my best to follow the diagonal of the veins and used a simple split stitch.
All done! One thing to watch for the future, as I was doing the filling I must have had a thumb on the bottom couched thread because it ended up being a little more wonky then it was before. Must have pushed on it.
Cutting out another piece of linen to back it with. Just whip stitched them together, carefully folding everything under.
The front side. You can see what I mean about the bottom edge having gone all flat.
