Veils

This past Tuesday at our baronial practice and social time, I facilitated a Veil Play Time, helping others with how to do their veils. Shared the ways I've been pinning them, some of the underpinings I have found success with like linen bands or a St. Birgitta's cap, what I've found with fabric weights, just general messing about to get some practice and confidence. I think it went well and those who participated said that it was very helpful!

For years and years, I made my SCA veils out of the light weight Fabric-store linen and I hated them. They never draped right. They just looked dumb. This past year, I started making them out of the medium weight linen. So much better! I think the light weight still has a place for certain uses, but the sort of typical "veil under a circlet" look seems better with the more medium weight.

This was from our recent barony Yule celebration when I even got out the fake braids.

There is something relaxing about hemming veils. I've been liking the oval shape lately, you can orient it either way depending on how you like the look that day.
